Piscataquis County was incorporated in 1838, taken from parts of adjacent Penobscot and Somerset counties. It is located at the geographic center of Maine. Originally, it extended north to the Canadian border, but in 1844, its northern portion was annexed back to Aroostook County. Piscataquis is one of the largest counties east of the Mississippi River and represents more than 10% of Maine's land mass.

The County also includes some of the most beautiful natural scenery in America. We live among thousands of acres of woodlands used by lumbermen and manufacturers of wood products and by locals and visitors year round for recreation. Within these forests are hundreds of lakes and ponds, including Moosehead Lake; the largest fresh-water lake in the eastern United States. Water covers just over 9% of the land mass. Mount Katahdin in the eastern part of the county is the highest mountain in Maine and represents the final stretch of the Appalachian Trail.
